  • The hilly terrain of Sanyi, with many mountains and few fields, is an acid red soil hill, suitable for the growth of camphor and tea trees. During the Japanese occupation period, Japanese people felt a lot of camphor trees to refine camphor oil. When the camphor forest was exhausted, residents of Sanyi hired workers to plant tea trees and develop a tea-making business. When ancestors planted tea trees, they first had to dig the ground and then found many camphor tree roots. Because of the effect of years of wind, sun, rain, weathering and insects, these tree roots formed plenty of unique natural shapes. Sanyi people very appreciated the beauty of this magic, and carved the natural tree roots according to the original shape, which created the unique "marvelous wood carving" style of Sanyi in the early days.

Contributor behind the scene, Lumber-making Factory

For woodcarving artisans, it is not only necessary to have carving techniques, but also good tools and wood materials in order to make the best of artistic creation. Before carving, wood needs to be processed by the large-scale three-dimensional cutting and pre-cut into an appropriate size. The unnecessary part or over-sized parts need to be removed for the artisans to carve. The lumber-making factory is the place for this processing.

The lumber-making industry in Sanyi area was coordinated with the development of the wood carving industry from the 1950s to the late 1970s.The wood-cutting industry at that time was extraordinary and the market demand was huge. An appointment us uallyhad to be made before two or three months. In its heyday, there were nearly 20 lumber-making factories. Because of the special features of Sanyi's local products (marvelous woodcarving), the size of the wood-cutting machine is larger than that of other Taiwanese factories. For example, "DongshanLumber-making Factory" owned Taiwan's largest wood-cutting machine, which specializes in cutting logs of special specifications.

For the lumber-making industry, 1992 was the watershed year because Taiwan government issued a logging ban. From 1992 to 1998, log production has decreased year by year, affecting the lumber-making industry to an extreme extent. With fewer and fewer logs, the production of lumber-making has also decreased. Most of the factories were closed. In Sanyi, only Dongshan Lumber-making Factory is still in operation

Sanyi's lumber-making industry has witnessed the transformation of Taiwan's wood industry from prosperity to decline. In the future, the lumber-making industry may slowly go into history due to not being needed. It is expected that through the preservation and records of the museum, the mysterious support of the carving industry chain in Sanyi will be revealed.
