  • In this exhibition area, there is one ingenious and unique screen made during the Japanese occupation period. This was made by early Sanyi residents using waste wood that was bitten by beetle larva e. A trunk was eaten by larvae of beetles and leaved many hollow stripes. A craftsman uses his idea to make this so called useless wood to become a fine screen. After slicing trunk into pieces and framed it into a screen, the hollow strips have its natural composition. The hollow strips, some are short, and some are long, and some looks like small holes, and some get together, and some separate from each other. This work is a representative of using concept about 「Nature」to create a work.

The wood carving industry of Sanyi started from Japanese occupation period(1920s). The people of Sanyi began to beautify the natural camphor tree roots by processing them into art works. WuJin-Bao established "Dongda Products" to engage in carving business. Wu Luosong from Sanyi, and Li Jin chuan and Li Yu zang from Tongxiao learned carving from Japanese art masters. They established a foundation for apprenticeships in woodcarving and the schools of wood carving. After the end of the Second World War, the Japanese occupation period ended, the Japanese had temporarily withdrawn from the export market of Sanyi woodcarving industry due to the defeat and the economic depression. During this period, Sanyi wood carving in dustryexpanded it smarket to Europe and the US because of the Korean War. In the 1960s, Japan gradually recovered from the post-war depression, coupled with the maturity of the European and American markets, Sanyi wood carving in dustryreached the peak of OEM export. There were plenty of wood carving art shops and many people were attracted to learn carving in Sanyi to make a living. At this time in Sanyi, almost every household was involved in the production and sale of woodcarving works, and the sound of hammering was endless. Buddha sculptures, large animal sculptures, figure sculptures, furniture, utensils, etc. are everywhere in woodcarving art shops on the street, and export containers were also crowded with these wood carving works.

“Duck Bait” – produced by Shuangfeng Wood Duck Factory, which mainly produces Wood Duck, Water Fowl and other products, which are exported to the United States, Japan and Europe. In order to hunt wild ducks, the hunters placed wooden ducks on the ponds as "duck bait". Making use of the swaying of a wood duck, along with the sound made by a duck flute to imitate a duck, the wild ducks can easily lose their alertness and fly down to rest in the pond. Therefore, the hunter's strategy of "duck baits for wild ducks" really works.
